Nieves Vázquez is from Houston, Texas with roots in the Sierra Madre Oriental of Eastern México coming from Huachichil Chichimeca and Mexican heritage. They now live in Tucson, Arizona and has over 5 years of professional experience in environmental community science, yet a lifetime experience in water protection. At Water For People, they specialize in immersive U.S. Water Access, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) curriculum, coalition strengthening across sectors to advance water sustainability, and supporting community-led solutions to water challenges in Arizona. Previously, they have worked for the Indigenous Resilience Center at the University of Arizona on the nexus of food, water, energy, soil (FEWS). They have also worked at Grand Canyon National Park as an Indigenous interpretation intern, and Bayou City Waterkeeper Alliance as both a Texas Policy Fellow and Art Illustrator. Nieves graduated with their Master of Science from the University of Arizona's School of Natural Resources and the Environment with a focus on Water, Society, and Policy under the guidance of Dr. Cherie De Vore at the Nihi Environmental Engineering Lab.
